When applying to college there are a range of items that you need to submit. The items include your application, standardized test scores, essays, and academic transcript. How much weight does a college or university give to each of these items? How do they judge your academic transcript? What happens if you have a decent grade average, but have a few C's on your report card?

Your chances of attending college are still good. Your academic transcript is only one variable in the college acceptance equation. The chances that you will be accepted are based on these items and it differs between academic institutions. For example, some institutions will give more weight to your standardized test scores.

In addition, the admissions board will investigate why you earned C's in only a few of your classes. The questions they will ask regarding the lower grades can include the following:

  • What was the level of the class? Was it an Honors class or an Advanced Placement class? These classes are harder academically so a C in one of these high level classes is much different then a C in a regular class.

  • Some high schools have tried to balance this out by giving students extra weight on their grades. For example, in an Honors class an A might be worth a 5.0 instead of a 4.0.

  • Are your poor grades focused on one subject only? For example, let's say that you want to study History and earn a Liberal Arts degree. If you earn lower grades in your math classes only then those C grades may not be an issue.

  • Do you have a learning disability? Perhaps you have an undiagnosed learning disability that displays itself more in certain classes. You can be tested for learning disabilities and be eligible to receive documentation that allows you to take a longer time on tests, etc.

  • What is your competition like? Remember you are competing against other students for spots in a freshmen class. It is common knowledge that some colleges and universities are much easier to be accepted to, so keep your competition in mind.

Grades are just one piece of the college acceptance pie. If you feel that your grades may be a factor then try to write the best college essay you possibly can. Study hard for the SAT and/or ACT standardized tests. Become involved in extracurricular activities to demonstrate that you are a well rounded individual. Colleges and universities will look at your college application with an all encompassing perspective. Now hit the books!
