What is the timeline for high school applications when applying to college?

Not sure when you should apply to college? Should you submit your applications in the beginning of your senior year or closer to graduation? Colleges and universities have various application procedures, but you can follow a general timeline for high school applications as a guide.

It is crucial to adhere to application deadlines as it affects your chances for receiving an academic scholarship and financial aid. Many students rely on this money for college. So what is the application timeline you should be aware of? The general timeline is listed below:

Timeline for Applications to College

Junior Year of High School

  1. September - Register for the PSAT
  2. October - Take the PSAT
  3. December - Register for the SAT
  4. January - Take the SAT
  5. March - June - visits colleges
  6. April - Take the ACT

Senior Year of High School

  1. September - Check the deadlines for applications for each college and university on your list. Take into consideration possible majors and housing that fills its admissions lists early in the school year. For example, engineering and business schools often admit students early in the year thus limiting the number of spots available come December.

    Register for the ACT or SAT if you wish to take them again.
     
  2. October - Take the ACT or SAT
    You should have your applications completed by this time if you wish to participate in early decision.
     
  3. November - The early decision deadline is usually November 1 - November 15th. Contact each college you are applying to for financial aid information. You want to make sure that you meet the financial aid deadlines.

    Complete your college applications by December 1st if you can.
     
  4. December - Work with your parents to compile your information for financial aid. You will need to complete a "needs analysis" form.
     
  5. January - The "needs analysis" financial aid form needs to be submitted. Your high school needs to send your most current academic transcripts. Make sure all your applications have been submitted as January marks application deadlines for many colleges.
     
  6. February & March - Colleges will reply to applicants regarding their admission status. Your "needs analysis report" for financial aid should arrive. Verify its accuracy and the deadline for application for financial aid.
     
  7. April - Choose the college you wish to attend from your acceptance list. Reply to your college of choice by May 1st. Colleges and universities will send financial aid information so you can see how much money for college you will receive.
     
  8. May - Finish any further forms you need to complete for your college of choice.
