International students applying for us colleges - problems and considerations.

|
It's all very well for international students to have gained admission to a prestigious university in the United States but before they arrive starry-eyed in their dream land they must ensure that they have plugged all the financial aspects so that they are not pushed out of their academic pursuits merely because of bad initial financial planning. They must ensure that either their parents have enough financial resources to see them through the entire educational period in the United States or that they have full and continuing sponsorship from public sources.
The students should also anticipate any problem that might arise to the source of the funding whether parent's money or a scholarship, which would jeopardize their stay in the United States. To deal with such a situation, the students must have a reliable backup plan that will see them through such a catastrophe. This is very important as once you arrive in the United States, you will be burdened with unending expenses such as tuition fees, buying books, rent, food, warm clothing, and transportation. Your focus will shift from your academic pursuits to making both ends meet if your overseas financial sources dry up suddenly.
There have been innumerable cases of overseas students coming well prepared financially to pursue their studies but all of a sudden they found that their government back home had put severe restrictions on repatriation of funds abroad. Such a situation can suddenly put the brakes on their educational pursuits and in fact, their immigration and residential status. If you are not able to pay your fee you will not be allowed to continue for more than a semester. This will lead to your getting ousted from the school with the consequent effect on your immigration status since you are required to be in school every semester. You would also fall short of paying rent and you might get evicted from your apartment. This situation can get out of control and you might find yourself in the hands of the immigration and Naturalization service to be held in detention and then finally getting deported.
What an end to your dreams of getting an international education! What has been mentioned above might be an extreme situation but possibilities are there for severe economic hardships to blow up in this direction. Given below is some useful information to help students to face these problems at the very outset.
Immediately on arrival in the United States, you might find that the surrounding environment is not very amiable, maybe even hostile. You might also encounter problems in getting health care coverage for you and your family, cheap day care for children and difficulty in getting your spouses involved in the university community, getting discriminated due to ethnicity and skin color and getting proper identification papers.
You might find that your cultural attributes are being ignored by the University and that cooperation, group projects and encouragement to achieve are neglected. Student advisory services might also be conspicuous by their absence.
International students, besides pursuing their academic courses, wish to learn
about the American culture and their way of life but due to a pervading sense of
isolation they are forced to interact only with their fellow countrymen and thus
they are not able to share the American cultural heritage.
