Getting started on finding your college: researching schools.
| ||||||||||
|
Finding the right college is, perhaps, as important as the actual academic learning program. You have to be extremely focused in your approach to identify the college that will fulfill all your educational needs and aspirations. The first thing that you need to do is to establish your priorities and then you should investigate a number of colleges and list down their characteristics. You can then match the two aspects and start your research in selecting the best college. However, it is important to aim high and aspire for bigger objectives from the very beginning.
Your search should start by going on the Internet and eliminating all those institutions that don't fit into your scheme of things. After the elimination process, start building up your list of the probable colleges and list all those that have certain characteristics that you like, such as the academic learning program, their locations and the size of the college. You can also add those institutions that you might have heard of from your family or friends.
Having established a list of about 15 schools, you should visit each school's website and ask for more information, if need be. You should now compile all the information that you have gathered and store it in one place. In this process, you might feel that a particular school is not suitable. You can strike it off your list and add on another if it catches your attention.
It's now time to assess your preliminary list again based on any reports from your friends or any additional information that you might have come across. Maybe, you might need to do some additional research. Having done the same, you would have got a pretty good idea of your priorities and at this stage you should list down your priority requirements again. You might have to do some serious research to evaluate each school and to find out how they measure up to your priority requirements.
It would be a good idea to make a chart to compare the various schools with respect to how they come up to your priority requirements. You could also make a pro/con list for each school and then try to make a further assessment effort. It is not easy to find the perfect solution but you will soon start to get a fair idea of what you can get.
This analysis will also help you to further eliminate those schools that don't come up to your expectations and having done that you should be able to zero in on about eight to ten schools, which is about the right number to apply to, as the whole process of applying is not very cheap besides being time-consuming.
Your final selection of the right college for your academic pursuits should take into account its location relative to your residence, the set up of its campus, the total enrollment numbers, the safety on its campus, its academic concentration, its achievements reflected by the SAT averages, its environment, the other activities being offered and what others think about it.
It would be a good idea to refer to books like "The Best 361 College" rankings
which will give the students' opinions regarding various factors regarding the
ease or difficulty of getting into a particular school and the levels of
academics in various schools. Information on campus life, admissions, academics
and financial aid can also be got in this report.
