You received your high school diploma and are ready to enter the world of
college. Your college search may involve searching for a college and university
that is far from home. The endless college search has your head spinning as you
go over the different colleges, college scholarships, and college grants. Why
not take a look at a community college close to home instead?
The Advantages of a Community College
- Core classes can be taken at a community college for cheaper tuition.
Typically the first two years of your college education will entail
taking core required classes. The college admission board will review your
high school academic performance and place you in specific levels of these
core classes. Some colleges require that you take specific entrance exams
that will allow you to "place out" of a core requirement.
Placing out of a core requirement is great because it shortens the list of
classes you have to take during your college education. However, placing out
of core classes usually happens for only a minority of college students.
Most college students have to take the required class or even take remedial
classes first.
You can take the remedial and core classes at your local community college
for less tuition. Your classes can then transfer to a four year college or
university if you wish.
- Community colleges are closer to home.
A major purpose of community colleges is to provide a college level
learning environment that is easily accessible by everyone in the community
and surrounding areas.
- Community colleges have a more personable setting.
Community colleges tend to have smaller class sizes. Plus, the faculty
is usually more approachable. You are not just a "number" in a herd of
college students.
- Community colleges offer great student loans and scholarships.
Community colleges tend to focus on specific career paths and trades. There
are numerous student loans and scholarships available. Many states also have
lottery funded student loans for education. Why compete against a large
number of students at large universities for these college scholarships when
you have a better chance of obtaining a college scholarship at a community
college?
A community college is a great place to start your college education for a
number of reasons. You can complete your core classes at a lower cost. You can
always transfer to a large college or university in the future. Community
colleges are a wonderful way to transition from high school to college.
